SUMMARY:You Are the Product: What the Internet Knows about You and Why it Matters
DESCRIPTION:In an increasingly connected world\, the recent scandal around data privacy\, claims of election rigging\, and our data being used in ways we never indented has caused widespread interest and concern. For the first time\, a large section of the public is now aware of the potential harms from data being used for nefarious purposes. But not all technology\, or social media is inherently evil\, in fact\, it’s both an important tool and a way for us to connect and communicate with endless exciting possibilities. In this talk we will discuss what types of data the largest technology companies gather\, how they use this data\, and what it means to be targeted by marketing and sales efforts that try to understand us and our habits. Through this discussion we can become more aware of what we share\, talk about privacy and the role social media is taking in our lives. We will look at a few simple tools to understand how data is collected\, and how you can use them to increase engagement\, understand your followers\, and harness the power of big data for good.
